of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months

Dear Friend,

I’m writing to share the results of our 2020 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health ([link removed]) with you. The second annual survey is the largest of its kind, and represents the experiences of over 40,000 LGBTQ youth from across the country.

As The Trevor Project’s Director of Research, my team works year-round to provide crucial data that deepens our understanding of ways to end suicide among LGBTQ youth. This year’s survey includes new data points on LGBTQ youth mental health disparities, discrimination, housing instability, barriers to mental health care and gender affirming care, conversion therapy, and suicide. The data highlights the urgent need for LGBTQ-inclusive policies, programs, and practices.

Here are just some of the insights from this year’s survey:
* 1 in 3 LGBTQ youth reported that they had been physically threatened or harmed in their lifetime due to their LGBTQ identity
* 46% of youth reported wanting psychological or emotional counseling from a mental health professional but were unable to receive it in the past twelve months
* Transgender and nonbinary youth who reported having their pronouns respected by all or most of the people in their lives attempted suicide at half the rate of those who did not have their pronouns respected

We invite you to check out the full results of the survey ([link removed]) and share with your friends, family, and colleagues. As the largest survey of LGBTQ youth mental health ever conducted, we hope its insights will help the many organizations and individuals working alongside Trevor to support LGBTQ young people around the world.

All the best,

Amy Green, Ph.D.
