Democrat,

As we head into the holiday season, we are all feeling the squeeze on our wallets as a result of Trump’s senseless tariff policy. Americans across our country are making compromises just to enjoy the basic necessities – food, clothing, even holiday gifts. The tariffs are expected to even raise the cost of Christmas trees and holiday decorations. Trump is America’s Grinch. He tries to claim we are in a “golden age” but Americans know this is a lie. At every turn, they are feeling the harsh reality of his policies. We need to take back Congress next year and institute safeguards against the wrecking ball the president has taken on our economy.

Good thing we have Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, who will work to counterbalance the bad policies coming out of Washington. Read more in this week’s Chairman’s Corner about her transition. You can also read more about the work Democrats did to get us a step closer to the Epstein files being released and my statement thanking Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman for her years of service to our country.

This week is also Transgender Awareness Week, where we take time to stand in solidarity with trans New Jerseyans in the face of discriminatory attacks, celebrate this community's contributions to the history of our state, and recommit ourselves to advancing greater equality and justice going forward. Yesterday was also Transgender Day of Remembrance. Let’s take a moment to remember those we lost to suicide or hateful violence and work together to build a brighter society for all.

— Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr.

THE SHERRILL TRANSITION

Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill has wasted no time since election night, putting together a strong team and preparing to take office in January. She met with Governor Murphy and the leaders of both parties in the state assembly and senate to discuss the path ahead and how to find ways to work together.

Just like when she was on the campaign trail, Sherrill has been in communities speaking to residents about the issues that matter most to them. At a food bank in Newark with Lt. Gov-elect Caldwell, she discussed the impact of Trump SNAP cuts and at small businesses in Pitman she underscored her agenda to grow and support local economies. As a fellow veteran, she memorialized those who died in service of our nation on Veterans Day in Livingston. She is an attentive leader ready to do the work as governor and we all look forward to her swearing in.

DEMOCRATS FIGHT FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

Americans of all political stripes have made themselves clear: release the Epstein files. For months, Donald Trump and his MAGA loyalists have done everything they could to stop it from happening, ranging from calling early recess to not swearing in a new congresswoman. Trump even personally called members to change their vote.

The pressure to pass the bill to release the Epstein files increased after Democrats on the House Oversight Committee delivered on their promise and released never-before-seen emails from Jeffrey Epstein, that revealed that Trump “spent hours at [Epstein’s] house” with one of Epstein’s victims and that Trump “of course,” “knew about the girls.”

Now public pressure and persistence of congressional Democrats have forced Trump’s hand to sign the legislation to release the files. This is a major win for transparency, accountability, and overdue justice for victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

THANK YOU CONGRESSWOMAN BONNIE WATSON COLEMAN

Chairman Jones’s Statement on the Retirement of Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman

The Watson family has long been a political dynasty in New Jersey and Bonnie Watson Coleman’s trailblazing career has only helped burnish that sterling reputation through her unwavering dedication to public service.

It is fitting that Bonnie chose less than a week after New Jersey elected the first Democratic woman to serve as governor to announce that she will not be seeking reelection after her term ends.

Bonnie’s historic achievements in becoming the first African American woman to serve as Chair of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee before being elected the first African American woman to represent New Jersey in the United States Congress will certainly never be forgotten. Her achievements will be passed down in history books and, more importantly, they will be cited around kitchen tables and in family living rooms in communities everywhere as a reminder that barriers that can be broken and dreams can be realized.

The Congresswoman has always been, first and foremost, a voice for the voiceless, and always among the first in line in the fight to protect our democracy. I know she is going to spend these next 13 months just as she has served over the previous five decades: standing up to President Trump and the MAGA movement and fighting every day to improve the lives of every family throughout the Twelfth Congressional district and the nation.
