AG Nessel Secures Court Order Protecting Libraries and Museums

*LANSING *– Today, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and a coalition of 20 other attorneys general secured an order (PDF) [ [link removed] ] permanently halting the dismantling of four federal agencies that provide services and funding supporting public libraries and museums, workers, minority-owned businesses, and efforts to combat homelessness nationwide. The coalition filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration in April [ [link removed] ], after an Executive Order was issued that attempted to dismantle several federal agencies created by Congress that collectively provide hundreds of millions of dollars for programs for states: 


* The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which supports museums and libraries nationwide through grantmaking, research, and policy development;
* The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), which promotes the growth and inclusion of minority-owned businesses through federal financial assistance programs;
* The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), which promotes peaceful resolution of labor disputes; and
* The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), which partners with states, local governments, and public and private nonprofit organizations to implement strategies to prevent and end homelessness.

Attorney General Nessel and the coalition previously secured a preliminary injunction halting the dismantlement in May [ [link removed] ].  

“Local libraries are invaluable to our communities, and I am relieved the Court has once again ruled in our favor, ensuring federal agencies that provide important services can continue to operate,” Nessel said. “Time and again, the White House has tried to illegally dismantle federal agencies and programs created by Congress, and time and again, my colleagues and I have successfully halted these actions, proving just how crucial litigation against unlawful actions by the Trump Administration is. We remain committed to defending the institutions and services our residents rely on.” 

Joining Attorney General Nessel in securing this permanent injunction are the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawai’i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
