As a Captain in the National Guard, if I was ever ordered to kill a non-combatant civilian or commit torture, I would disobey that order. What Goodlander said was correct and I stand by her.
Orders are no excuse. Early in my career as a human rights attorney I hunted down and brought justice to someone who some would say was “just following orders” — a far-right killer who, acting on orders from the fascist Pinochet regime, executed beloved Chilean folk singer Victor Jara.
Congress needs more Democrats who are willing to stand up to the illegality of the administration, in action not just rhetoric. It needs leaders who will have the backs of their fellow Democrats when they are needed most (such as when the president calls for their execution).
