Winter
Reduce Salt Usage this Winter
Using too much salt harms plants, wildlife, concrete, and our lakes and rivers. Storm drains don’t remove salt—just *1 teaspoo*n can pollute 5 gallons of water. You can help protect our waterways by using salt wisely:
* Don’t over apply: Use only 4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
* Check the temperature: Salt only works above 15°F.
* *Shovel early:* The more snow you remove, the less ice—and salt—you need.
* *Sweep up leftovers* and reuse them.
* *Choose MPCA Level 1 certified* snow removal services.
* *Consider salt-free water softeners.*
* *Store salt properly:* Keep it covered and contained to prevent runoff.
Small changes make a big impact—thank you for helping protect our local waters!

Delaware Ave. Tree Planting
On November 8, Mounds Park Academy student John Shillcox led a volunteer tree-planting project on Delaware Avenue between Ellen Street and Annapolis Street. The City removed the mature ash trees in this area because of Emerald Ash Borer, leaving the street with little shade.
Volunteers planted six new boulevard trees to begin restoring the lost canopy. Homeowners chose from several Minnesota native species.
The project was part of John’s Senior Service Project. He chose tree planting because he enjoys being outdoors and noticed how bare the neighborhood looked after the ash trees were removed. He wanted to help bring back the natural beauty and shade the trees once provided.
The new trees will help replace canopy lost to Emerald Ash Borer and will also:
* Reduce heat by shading paved areas
* Provide food and habitat for wildlife
* Improve air quality
* Reduce stormwater runoff
Thanks, John!
