Legislative Update: November 21, 2025

Dear Neighbors –

As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I’ll share that I’m feeling thankful to be a part of our strong, loving South Minneapolis community.  It’s been an incredibly difficult fall during an already hard year for Minnesotans, but I’m heartened to see so much unity and resilience from our community as we continue to fight for real change to prevent gun violence, resist the authoritarian tactics of the Trump Administration, and push to unrig our economy and our democracy.

That resilience was on full display last Saturday at the First Annual Harper Moyski Memorial Event, where the community came together to celebrate Harper’s life and her love of volleyball. The volleyball tournament and brewery event was a beautiful way to bring people together and raise money to fund a permanent memorial for Harper Moyski and Fletcher Merkel and support youth volleyball programs and the Minneapolis Parks Foundation.

Walking into that room of community, kids and love - Harper’s light shone bright through her family - Jackie, Mike and Quinn, and all of her friends and classmates who loved her. The love and work of the Moyski family, all the organizers who helped make it happen, and people who attended and donated made this a very special and successful event. You can still support the memorial fundraiser here using this GoFundMe link. [ [link removed] ]

Connecting with Community

It has been a busy and exciting fall for the Washburn High School Millers, and I’m so glad to be able to support some of our district’s wonderful students. Two weeks ago, Washburn’s football team gave it their all in the State Quarterfinals and last weekend, the cast and crew of Washburn’s theater department closed out their excellent production of "Chicago". It’s fun to watch, cheer on and be blown away by the talent, and passion of our next generation!

Republicans Are Making Health Care More Expensive

This summer, Donald Trump and his MAGA allies in Congress ended the premium tax credits that helped lower the price of health insurance for working families. Now, the so-called “deal” crafted and passed by Republicans in Washington reopened the federal government without doing anything to make health care more affordable.

*The reality is that our health care system works great to make money for the insurance companies and their billionaire executives at the expense of the health and budgets of everyday people.* Premiums for many Minnesotans in the private market are expected to rise by as much as 50%, with farmers, small business owners, and older adults facing the biggest impacts.

The cruelty from Donald Trump and his allies is compounding this crisis. Earlier this year, they stripped Medicaid coverage from 140,000 Minnesotans, including some of our most vulnerable neighbors. In recent days, not only did Republicans refuse to stop health care premiums from skyrocketing, but they did so by intentionally putting low-income families at dire risk of hunger by fighting against SNAP food assistance payments. These actions are cruel enough on their own, but Republicans made these cuts to pay for their tax giveaways for billionaires, which is downright unconscionable.

Health Care Graphic

I’m grateful for the DFL members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation, including our Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Senators Klobuchar and Smith, who stood firm in the fight to make healthcare more affordable. I’m downright angry with the eight Senate Democrats who caved to the Republican’s cruelty but the unfortunate reality is that with a federal Trump trifecta, Minnesota is going to have to lead the way and forge our own path to fight the oligarchy and corruption in D.C.

Here in Minnesota, DFLers have worked to expand coverage and make vital medications more affordable, but *until we eliminate corporate greed and private profit from our health care system, prices will only continue to rise.* I’m continuing to fight to unrig our economy here in Minnesota, to take power away from the billionaires and corporations and give it back to the people.

Cold Weather Rule and Energy Assistance

As we head into colder weather, I want to remind you of the resources available to ensure that all Minnesotans stay warm and are protected from utility service shut-offs.

Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule [ [link removed] ] is in effect from October 1 to April 30, protecting residential utility customers from having their electric or natural gas service shut off. To protect your service from disconnection, you must make and keep a reasonable payment plan that you and your utility agree on. You can set up a payment plan any time during the rule season.

Call your natural gas, electric, municipal utility, or electric cooperative for more information, or contact the Commission’s Consumer Affairs Office at [email protected] or call 651-296-0406, 1-800-657-3782.

Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps ensure that struggling Minnesota families can afford their energy. Both renters and homeowners can qualify to receive funding to help cover energy costs, and eligibility is based on income and household size.

LIHEAP is federally funded and administered by the Department of Commerce, which works with local service providers throughout the state. While the government shutdown is now over, LIHEAP is still waiting for federal funding for this program year. Most benefits cannot be issued until that funding is received. However, they are accepting applications and encourage you to apply. You can find more information here [ [link removed] ].
