A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan
This week we’ve published our proposal for Local Government Reorganisation ahead of a discussion at Executive Board next Tuesday (25 November).
The proposal responds to the government’s criteria, but also directly responds to feedback from our residents, partners and businesses, and creates a unique footprint that focusses service delivery of one unitary authority on an urban conurbation and a second unitary authority serving the more rural areas to better reflect how our people and businesses live and work and visit.
Our current city boundaries no longer reflect the reality of modern Nottingham. While our official population stands at 328,000, more than 750,000 people live within the wider built-up area — many of whom rely on Nottingham’s services and economy every day.
This proposal is about fairness, efficiency, and a stronger local voice. It responds to all of the criteria set out by government and offers councils that are large enough to deliver, yet close enough to listen.

Council on track
The Council has reached a milestone in its improvement journey today, with the publication of the latest progress report from Government Commissioners.
Their third progress report shows that improvement continues to be made by the Council, with its focus on strategic direction, financial sustainability, and operational effectiveness.
Read about the Commissioner's report online.
The Council’s latest budget also shows improvements, with a £14.6 million underspend forecast this financial year.
A report published earlier this week shows that at the midpoint of 2025/26, the Council expects to use less than a third of the Exceptional Financial Support allowed by Government and may not need any next year.

Help us bring hope this Christmas for young people leaving care
For most of us, Christmas is a time filled with warmth, family, and celebration, but for many young people leaving the care system, it can be a stark reminder of what they don’t have.
We want to remind them that they’re not alone. Cllr Cheryl Barnard, Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, is leading on creating Christmas hampers filled with gifts, treats, and everyday essentials. It’s a small but meaningful way to show these young adults that their community cares about them and believes in their future.
