But what did Republicans expect?

john,

Across the country, anti-abortion lawmakers in South Carolina are pushing the most extreme legislation we've seen so far in the post-Roe era—and it just became the clearest example of how far Republicans are willing to go to end a woman's right to choose.

Here's what South Carolina Republicans' new bill aims to do:

  • Treat abortion like homicide and send women to prison for up to 30 years
  • Eliminate exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal diagnosis
  • Criminalize helping someone travel out of state for care
  • Punish people for sharing information about abortion
  • Redefine contraception to exclude anything that prevents ovulation and implantation of an embryo (like many common birth control methods)

This bill is NOT about protecting families, and it's NOT about healthcare policy—this is about control. It is redefining healthcare for women in the worst way possible.

But it's not just Democrats who think this bill is atrocious. Major anti-abortion groups are pulling their support, saying this legislation goes too far in ending abortion rights. If the same people who have fought for bans and restrictive, even dangerous, legislation before are saying this "goes too far," we should all be paying attention.

As the first pro-choice woman doctor in Congress, Kim strongly stands against any legislation that would put women in harm's way–and this bill does exactly that. It may seem like this is just a problem in South Carolina, but if this bill becomes law, it will embolden every other anti-choice Republican across the country to enact something similar. We can't allow that to happen in Congress.

We need to codify the protections that Roe v. Wade granted—but the only way to do that is by flipping the House blue and electing for-the-people Democrats who will stand up for reproductive freedom. Will you chip in $5 right now to protect a pro-chocie defender in Kim and help us fight for a blue House that will always stand with women and their healthcare? >>
