John,

The midterm elections may be a year away, but the work to decide who will win the House of Representatives is happening right now .

Republicans know their policies aren’t helping people. The polls show that their agenda, and their leaders, are deeply unpopular. And in this month’s elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, we saw an electorate that is eager for a different path forward.

That’s why Republicans have launched an unprecedented attempt to entrench themselves in power. In several Republican-led states, they’ve gerrymandered the maps so that they can avoid being accountable to the will of the people.

Now, thanks to your support and the work of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, they’re running into some real resistance.

In California, voters overwhelmingly supported a temporary measure to counter the gerrymandering crisis. Other states are exploring following California’s lead. And in states like Missouri and Kansas, citizens are organizing to stop their leaders from using manipulated maps. Like many of us, voters overwhelmingly believe that the maps should be fair — because elections should be fair.

But the other side isn’t finished with their assault on our democracy. They are banking on other states, like Florida, Indiana, and New Hampshire, to enter the fray and continue the cycle of perpetual gerrymandering. And they’re asking the Supreme Court to strike down a critical part of the Voting Rights Act so they can throw out maps where communities of color have fair representation.

Attorney General Holder and I started the NDRC to safeguard democracy in moments like this. That work has never been more important — which is why I’m asking for your support right now to help ensure we can keep up the fight against Republican power grabs. [[link removed]]

The people in power are counting on your cynicism. They want you to think there is nothing you can do, because that’s how they win. Don’t let them. If there’s one thing history has taught us, it is that the most important position in a democracy is citizen.

We don’t need to speculate about what’s at stake. We’re witnessing it. We know now where this administration wants to take this country. We know how they want to corrupt our democracy.

That’s why the work of the NDR PAC is among the most urgent causes in the country. We can fight back, we can win, and we can come out on the other side with our democracy intact — but it’ll take all of us doing our part. [[link removed]]

Please make a donation today — and let’s keep building the movement we need to preserve and strengthen our democracy.

Your support matters, especially right now.

Thank you,

Barack Obama
