And while they refuse to back down, the reality is this: standing up for what’s right is not without its risks. From day one in office, they have received countless security threats — and with anti-Blackness, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and misogyny on the rise, these threats are only increasing.
Alexandria, Ayanna, Ilhan, and Rashida need to go above and beyond what’s required for most elected officials to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Hiring security and implementing safety protocols come with the job of truth-telling and justice-seeking.
These steps are necessary because the threats they face are real, targeted, and escalating. And while these measures protect them and their families, they also pull resources away from the work we all depend on: community organizing, mutual aid, and fighting back against the rise of authoritarianism.
