Congratulations Friend
--
Thanks to action from people like you, the City of Cleveland has extended the shutoff
moratorium for Cleveland Public Power and Cleveland Water through
the end of the city's State of Emergency, or July 31.
We're encouraged that Cleveland has committed to preserving
these protections through the declared emergency, but the city
must go further to ensure that residents are able to stay connected to
power and water for the length of the pandemic.
Without water, how will residents wash their hands to stay
healthy? Without power, how will vulnerable neighbors power lifesaving
medical equipment or stay cool during the heat? Without electricity,
how will children access the internet to continue their
education?
We need decisive action to prevent utility shut
offs
Access to utilities is a basic human right and our leaders
must treat it as such. It's never OK to be without access to
utilities. Some Ohio utilities have suspended new shutoffs
voluntarily, but more transparency and urgency is needed to restore
electricity and water to every home.
That's why we can't stop with this progress in Cleveland. We
must keep pushing for guaranteed statewide access to utilities for the
length of the pandemic and beyond.
Thanks to leadership from their Governor, Michigan residents
will be safe from water shutoffs through the end of the year.
We need Governor Mike DeWine to take similar action now,
especially as unpaid utilities bills ultimately result in higher rates
for all customers.
Thank you for standing up for energy
justice.
