| Center Happenings Updates from The NYC LGBT Community Center | | | | |
Thanksgiving is a time that carries complex and layered meanings for many in our community. While it can be seen as a day for gratitude and togetherness, it’s also a reminder of the painful history of Native Americans in this country—of land stolen, cultures erased, lives lost, and the continued fight for justice. For LGBTQ+ people, Thanksgiving can bring additional complications, particularly for those who may not feel welcome or affirmed at traditional family gatherings. That’s why, at The Center, we honor both the need for reflection and the importance of
creating spaces of joy, connection, advocacy, and belonging.
Right now, as we navigate a challenging political environment where the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ people are under attack, chosen family feels more critical than ever. For many LGBTQ+ people, chosen family isn’t just a concept—it’s a lifeline. It’s about creating a network of love, support, and solidarity in the face of adversity.
As we reflect on what we're grateful for this season, we want you to know that as a valued member of our community, you are core to our mission and vision. Thank you for being. | | | | | Transgender Day of Remembrance: Lives Remembered, Futures Reclaimed Thursday, Nov. 20 | 6–9 PM Join us as we share a meal and space in honor of our transgender community members who have passed away, whether due to violence or suicide. | | | Shout Out to Center Members
Writer, therapist, and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Dr. Charles Silverstein led the effort to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. After his passing, The Center was humbled to receive several pieces from his private art collection. Thanks to his visionary generosity, these artworks raised over $57,000 in auctions this year—funds to directly support our programs for the next generation. Have you thought about the legacy you’d like to leave for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers? Let’s chat!
