Email from Sea Shepherd Conservation Society The strongest protection yet. See behind the scenes. SHOP | SUPPORT | VOLUNTEER Dear John, ABC 10News has released a remarkable special report, “Edge of Extinction: The Last Vaquita,” taking viewers inside the refuge where Sea Shepherd and the Mexican Navy work every day to protect the rarest marine mammal on Earth. Kimberly Hunt reported this story with clarity and accuracy, showing the world the reality of a mission you helped make possible. I am struck by how far we have come. You were with us in the early years, when a small group of determined crew operated in dangerous waters with limited tools, confronting illegal fishing and the traffickers pushing this species toward extinction. Those were difficult days, and you stayed with us. WATCH THE SPECIAL I am incredibly proud of the captains, crew, and volunteers who carried this mission forward, and of the team on patrol at this very moment in the Vaquita Refuge. Their dedication and resilience have created the strongest protection this species has ever had. Their example is why I have contributed personally to this campaign through the years. In the face of unchecked exploitation, their courage made it impossible to stand by and do nothing. You also stood with us as we built a new approach with partners in the region and with the Government of Mexico. Together we now maintain a constant presence in the refuge, provide two Navy-operated interception vessels on the water, and support real enforcement capacity every day of the year. We are seeing signs of hope. Healthy vaquitas are alive in the refuge. Calves have been documented. The animals remain strong and capable of recovery. But this effort is not over. We continue to remove illegal nets, expand pathways to recycle and repurpose this gear within the region, and support the Navy and scientific teams that make this protection possible. Every dollar donated through December 31 is matched, making this the most impactful moment of the year to support our work in the Vaquita Refuge and beyond. Thank you for standing with us through every chapter of this mission. Your commitment has helped ensure that the last vaquitas still have a chance to survive.
