Email from Political Research Associates Hi John, After one year as PRA’s Executive Director, I am more confident than ever in PRA's role as the go-to research and strategy center to defeat authoritarianism. Thanks to supporters like you, for almost a decade PRA has developed some of the best strategies to undermine anti-immigrant sheriffs—prime architects of Trump’s deportation machine. Did you know anti-immigrant sheriffs have been at the forefront of expanding 287(g) agreements that allow state and local law enforcement to effectively function as ICE officers? These agreements increased nearly tenfold under Trump’s second term, leading to the disaster of ramped up deportations you and I are seeing today. Will you help PRA disrupt the deportation machine today? In the last year, I have kept hope because of PRA’s work. Drawing on decades of research and strategy development—including a first-of-its-kind interactive map exposing over 400 sheriffs with ties to ICE—PRA has worked with social justice partners and journalists to: Close detention facilities and end sheriff-ICE contracts, such as in Bristol County, MA in partnership with Bristol County Correctional Justice. Develop targeted campaigns to unseat far-right sheriffs, such as with Sheriff Accountability Action. Shift media narratives to expose how sheriffs are at the heart of the deportation machine: sheriffs oversee a third of all prisons and detention centers in the U.S. Translate research into action to defeat ICE today “Law enforcement has always been rooted in the history of White supremacy in this country. We actually have hard evidence to prove it based on the research of PRA. … This [sheriffs map] gives us the playbook. We know what they’re gonna do, and it gives us the opportunity to decide we are going to come together across our own sectoral differences to do something about it. … This is an opportunity to fight for the progressive policies that we’ve always deserved.” Ash-Lee Henderson Former Co-Executive Director, Highlander Center A year into my tenure, I am ever more confident in PRA’s role to build power for democracy by resourcing social justice movements and media with the strategy and analysis they need to outcompete authoritarianism. Will you support PRA today as we build the capacity of the pro-democracy movement? Build the capacity of pro-democracy movements Thank you for your support. We couldn’t do this without you. In solidarity, Sylvia Broude Executive Director P.S.
