Donald Trump is trying to remake the Department of Justice in his disturbing image. He’s threatened and fired career attorneys who refuse to go along with his attacks on the rule of law and replaced them with extreme loyalists who are willing to bend to his will and do anything he asks.
Despite what Donald Trump may think, the lawyers at the Department of Justice are not his personal lawyers. They are the people’s lawyers, tasked with defending the Constitution, upholding the rule of law, and protecting our democracy.
The article in New York Times Magazine recounts chilling stories of career lawyers being asked to investigate universities that Trump disagreed with, phony claims of voter fraud, and any perceived rivals, including Letitia James, James Comey, and Jack Smith.
The Justice Department, usually a tool for accountability and real justice, is now full of Trump criminal defense lawyers and sycophants like Pam Bondi, Kash Patel, Ed Martin, and countless others who are far more concerned with retribution than they are with justice.
We’re living in unprecedented times, John. Trump is working to turn the Justice Department into another political arm of his administration.
We need to speak out against this blatant dismantling of the Justice Department.
