Hi John,
Our It Gets Better: Changemakers [[link removed]] grantees [[link removed]] are hard at work making a real difference for LGBTQ+ youth in their schools and communities, and I wanted to bring you in on what that looks like up close.
Our youth grantees are creating and stocking a queer closet, complete with gender-affirming clothing and care packages for students who need them. In October, this student group hosted several volunteer events to get resources out into the community. At a local Pride event, they distributed more than 50 different kinds of gender-affirming items to attendees.
One person, after receiving new clothing, started crying and hugged me at a local Pride event. It proved to me that the work we’re doing really matters and encouraged me to continue. - student leader, Georgia grantee
These grantees also partnered with their local PFLAG chapter to host a small clothing swap for LGBTQ+ youth. In the coming months, they will continue sourcing more gender-inclusive items through community donations, thrift stores, and queer-friendly businesses. They’re thinking creatively, building partnerships, and making sure young people have what they need to feel seen and affirmed.
LGBTQ+ youth, particularly in the South, need urgent access to affirming items, safe environments, and supportive people. This grant is helping provide all three.
Since 2022, It Gets Better: Changemakers has distributed nearly $1.6 million to back student-led projects like this one. At a time when LGBTQ+ youth are being attacked and sidelined on a grand scale, these students are building something very different: safety, joy, and belonging.
If this work resonates with you, I invite you to help power it [[link removed]]. To support projects like this one, please consider making a gift to the It Gets Better: Changemakers grant fund through our Changemakers donor portal [[link removed]]. Donations of $250 or more will be credited as supporters for the 2026–27 grant cycle, and we’ll keep you updated every month with stories from grantees across the country so you can see the impact you’re helping possible.
