Friend, On Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Southern Poverty Law Center honors and memorializes those we’ve lost to anti-trans violence. In today’s political climate, discrimination, hate and violence are a horrifically common experience for our transgender family, friends and neighbors. That’s why our work won’t stop until all people can feel safe, included and respected, no matter their gender identity. 🏳️⚧️ 🩷 The most recent FBI hate crimes report recorded 1,950 hate crimes on the basis of sexual orientation (the second-highest figure ever recorded) and 463 hate crimes on the basis of gender identity (also the second-highest figure ever recorded). The SPLC also recorded 96 active anti-LGBTQ+ hate groups across the nation in our most recent Year in Hate and Extremism report. These alarming numbers are tied to the renewed focus on false conspiracy theories that paint LGBTQ+ people — notably trans people and drag artists — and their allies as sexual predators. Anti-LGBTQ+ groups target LGBTQ+ people and events for intimidation and violent campaigns designed to drive LGBTQ+ people from public life. This threatens the ability of trans people to live their full, authentic lives, and has contributed to heightened suicide rates, particularly among trans youth.
