Dear Readers,
Earlier this fall, I received a note from a woman who after nearly a decade of living in her apartment, was being told to vacate her home. “Please, I need help,” she wrote, explaining she suspected her landlord wanted to raise the rent beyond what she could afford. “I have no family, no attorney…I really don’t wanna be homeless.”
Sadly, emails like this are common for us to receive in the City Limits newsroom, where we see up close the impact of living in one of the world’s most expensive cities, and the lack of affordable housing.
I replied to her directly with a list of resources I thought could help. Later our reporting team produced this comprehensive guide ([link removed]) on what tenants should do if they’re struggling to pay rent or facing eviction. We spent weeks talking to housing experts and attorneys about programs and services that can help people stay in their homes, which are often hard to find and confusing to navigate.
In addition to the investigative journalism we’ve long been known for, City Limits’ mission is to serve everyday New Yorkers with unbiased, accessible information and resources—cutting through confusing bureaucracy to make sure people know their options, especially during times of crisis.
Who’s covered by the new “Good Cause” eviction law ([link removed]) ? What should you do if your landlord won’t turn on the heat ([link removed]) ? How do you actually get that security deposit back ([link removed]) , and how can low-income homeowners avoid thecity’s notorious tax lien sale ([link removed]) ? With stories like this, we aim to empower low-income communities where residents often feel powerless, by arming them with the information they need to improve their lives, and stay in their homes.
But we can’t do it alone. As a nonprofit news agency, we rely on community support to do the kind of deep reporting and community outreach you’ve come to rely on. We’re raising $40k ([link removed]) to keep New Yorkers informed, empowered and equipped to build a city that works for all.
There has never been a better time to support us: Starting now through December 31st all gifts will be matched ([link removed]) by Newsmatch up to $1000.
Will you double your impact by making a donation ([link removed]) or renewing your support today?
Thank you.
