John,
Out-of-touch incumbent Rep. Steve Cohen has become so used to having his seat in Congress handed to him that for the longest time, he didn’t bother to post on his social media accounts, host events, or do much meaningful community outreach in Tennessee’s 9th district.
Now that he’s being challenged by Justice Democrats-endorsed, working-class, progressive State Rep. Justin J. Pearson, he’s going on the defensive.
On a podcast this week, Cohen compared Justin’s announcement to run against him to Pearl Harbor… yikes.
You read that right. Steve Cohen thinks people-powered primaries against entrenched incumbents are equivalent to PEARL HARBOR.
Before his seat was at risk, Cohen previously raved about Justin’s leadership, stating, “Justin is for people. He showed it with the fight to beat the pipeline. He did it by organizing people and beating the big oil companies…His experience, his knowledge, and his understanding of human beings is so far beyond his years.”
Now, as entrenched politicians often do, he has a different tune because he cares more about his seat than his constituents. He even said he opposes term limits of any kind.
Cohen may have been in public office for more than 40 years, but he’s failing to meet the moment, deliver for his district, and defend Nashville from Trump’s fascist attacks. Justin has the lived experience, public service, and organizing chops to fight harder and achieve better for working families in TN-09.
It’s time for Cohen to pass the torch to the next generation — if he’s unwilling to do so, then the people will make that decision for him at the ballot box come primary election day!
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
