It’s American Education Week, a time meant to celebrate the people and families who make public education possible. Today’s theme is Family Day, a reminder that school safety doesn’t start at the school gate. It begins at home, in daily routines, and in the decisions adults make long before a child enters a classroom. And, one of the most important decisions a family can make is secure firearm storage.
The consensus among experts is that most firearms used by minors in school shootings come from their own home or the home of a relative. The solution is simple, practical, and proven. And the evidence is clear: when firearms are stored securely, children are safer everywhere, including in schools.
That is why Teachers Unify launched Project Lockdown, a national effort to equip educators, parents, and caregivers with the tools and knowledge they need to make secure storage a standard safety practice.
Over the last few months, educators across the country have been using our materials to initiate honest conversations with families, share safety tools, and foster a deeper understanding of how one simple habit can protect entire communities. But expanding this work requires resources. If you believe in practical, preventive solutions that keep students safe, we would be grateful for your support.
Your gift today will help us:
- Provide comprehensive, secure storage resources for families, educators, and school staff.
- Promote a proactive approach to classroom and community safety.
- Support educators who are leading safety conversations in their communities.
When we equip teachers and families with the support they need, we strengthen the foundation of safety that every student deserves.
