Dear Team,
I wanted to share an important update from South Carolina—and a major victory that supporters like you helped make possible.
In recent weeks, extremist lawmakers attempted to fast-track S.323, a sweeping bill that would have created the most extreme abortion ban in the country. It would have criminalized pregnant people, targeted access to medication abortion, threatened providers, penalized anyone who shared information about abortion care, and more.
Their strategy relied on pushing the bill forward quickly and quietly. With our partners at the Women's Rights and Empowerment Network (WREN) and other members of the state coalition, we made sure that didn't happen. Our State Policy & Advocacy Team worked closely with WREN on analysis, talking points, and strategy—and then helped catalyze a national effort to shine a spotlight on what was unfolding:
- Nimra Chowdhry, our Senior State Legislative Counsel, spoke with ABC News, the New York Times, and the Huffington Post to bring national attention to the threat.
- We shared a comprehensive messaging and resources guide with press outlets, state and national partners, and members of Congress.
- We elevated the issue for hundreds of thousands of followers across our social channels ahead of both hearings.
Together, we made it impossible for lawmakers to move S.323 unnoticed—and just yesterday, when the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee had the chance to advance the bill, the vote failed 3–2.
This is a tremendous victory for South Carolinians, who showed an unwavering resolve in fighting back against a bill that threatened abortion, IVF, contraception, and even free speech.
Your commitment makes victories like this possible—and keeps us fighting for reproductive freedom everywhere.
Warmly,
Nancy Northup
President & CEO
P.S. If you're inspired by this win, make a gift today and it will go 2X as far to help protect reproductive freedom wherever it's under attack.
