You know me, and you know that nothing matters to me more than making life better for Wisconsin families.

When I first ran for Senate in 2012, a lot of powerful people didn’t think I had a shot. They thought there was no way Wisconsin would send an openly gay woman to the U.S. Senate.

That didn’t matter to me though, because Wisconsin voters had already put me in the House as the state’s first female member of Congress and the nation’s first openly gay challenger. I knew that with the help of an incredible grassroots team behind me, we could accomplish anything together.

I only had one goal in that race: to fight as hard as I could to make a real difference in people’s lives. That goal is what’s driven me in my career as a public servant, all the way to the U.S. Senate.

I was so proud to become the first woman elected to the United States Senate from Wisconsin and the first openly gay Senator in our nation’s history. And I’ve been fighting every day since to protect and expand LGBTQ+ rights, defend our democracy, make health care accessible and affordable, and so much more.

In the Senate, I’ve been driven by Wisconsin’s state motto: Forward. For me, that means we must always work together to help provide fairness, equality, and economic opportunity for all. It means we have to keep working for a future that realizes those goals.

And we have to work harder than ever, because congressional Republicans and Donald Trump are trying to set us back decades. 

I will always fight back, but it will take real people power to send a message that the American people won't stand for this.
