Hi, this is Rep. Eric Swalwell.

As young parents, Brittany Pettersen and I both understand the challenges, the roadblocks, and the barriers so many Americans face to raising their children. As a husband and father, I know one of them is how overwhelming traveling with a newborn can be.

Having a baby in your arms is already a challenge, and the last thing mothers should worry about is whether their breast milk or formula will be mishandled at the checkpoint.

Not long ago, Brittany and I shared these thoughts with each other. And we decided to do something about it: We introduced the BABES Act to Congress — legislation that will make air travel safer, more consistent, and more humane for parents traveling with breast milk, formula, and feeding equipment.

And I wanted to share an exciting update: Our legislation just unanimously passed the House. Now, it’s on its way to be signed into law.

Like so many other moms, Brittany even told me she’s experienced the frustration of having to throw out milk or pumping supplies herself, despite them being TSA-approved.

But the BABES Act will change things. This bill ensures TSA officers receive proper training and follow robust hygienic standards so parents can travel with confidence. This is about giving families peace of mind and making sure babies have the nutrition they need.

And listen, we know this bill isn’t everything. We know there’s still so much work left to do to make child care more affordable, bring down the cost of health care, and finally build an economy that works for all families — not just those at the very top. But it’s a step in the right direction.
