FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Skagit County Veterans Service Specialist Lead, Chris Diaz, Receives Outstanding Service to Veterans Award
The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) has awarded the Outstanding Service to Veterans Distinguished Service Award [ [link removed] ] to Chris Diaz, Skagit County Veterans Service Specialist Lead, in recognition of his exceptional accomplishments and contributions to veterans in Skagit County. Mr. Diaz was offered the opportunity to be a guest of honor in the Auburn Veterans Parade on November 8th.
Each year, WDVA recognizes two individuals and one team who go above and beyond in their service to veterans and their families with Outstanding Service to Veterans Awards. Whether they submit claims for benefits, arrange funeral honors for grieving families, coordinate events, or contribute countless hours in veteran hospitals or nursing homes, award recipients champion what it means to “Serve Those Who Served.” The awards program is sponsored by the Governor’s Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee.
Chris Diaz served honorably in the U.S. Navy for nearly ten years. He was deployed to the Middle East three times and twice to the Western Pacific region aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. His first command was VAQ-128 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, where he participated in a joint expeditionary squadron for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Northern Watch. His second command was VMFAT-101 out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, where he helped maintain combat aircraft to support aircrew training on both aircraft carriers and land-based operations. Mr. Diaz served his third command with VAQ-131 at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, serving aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. In this role he was among the first responders to the 2004 tsunami around the Indonesian Island Group.
Mr. Diaz currently serves as the Veterans Services Specialist Lead for Skagit County's Veterans Assistance Program. As an accredited Veteran Service Officer with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), he assists veterans and their family members in applying for and receiving benefits available to them. This may include filing disability claims, securing healthcare and housing, applying for education and training, arranging transportation, and more. Mr. Diaz helps veterans and their families connect with various resources, guides them through the claims process, and communicates with the VA on their behalf to ensure they receive the services and support they are entitled to and deserve.
