Hey, it’s Jennifer Jenkins. You may be wondering how this little girl here: Ended up here: Let me take you back to the beginning. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, I grew up in a working-class family. My father, a corrections officer, held multiple jobs to support my mom, brother, and me. My mother struggled with her health and was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, similar to MS, when I was little. I grew up not only being extremely independent because of my mom’s health, but also environmentally aware, as I saw my parents struggle to pay my mom’s medical bills. I worked my ass off through school to give my family a better life than I had when I was younger. I got my master’s degree in Communication Sciences and later worked as a Speech Language Pathologist with Pre-K students. Here I am reading to my students: But the truth is, I landed in the same situation my parents were in. Unable to make ends meet for my family on one salary. My husband and I each started working multiple jobs to provide for our family. I would deliver groceries to other families to feed my own. So there I was, starting a young family and struggling to make ends meet. My last straw was seeing extremists take over my daughter’s school district. I knew then it was time for me to step up and take action. So here I am, standing with students peacefully protesting against the extremists, and standing up for LGBTQ+ students in my district: I listened to the needs of the parents and community, and because I did that, I won. As a member of the district’s school board, I faced extreme hate and harassment. But my supporters responded with overwhelming love. Here I am contributing to the chalk messages my supporters left me in response to the attacks: My time as a school board member showed me that the people need someone who will listen to them and fight for them. I’ve won a red seat before, and I’m ready to do it again. If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a fighter. It’s that I can defeat the odds with enough support behind me. So, this all leads me to today. I’m a mom, an educator, and a common-sense fighter for all families. Your support means more than you know. Thank you for everything, seriously. Jennifer |
