Dear friend,

With so much happening in the world, I’m sending you much love and an invitation to pause for a moment with the message below to reflect on how we can keep showing up for one another, NHRC, and all the people we serve this GivingTuesday.

Every day, we see and feel it. Black, Native, and Latine/x communities experience disproportionate stigma and criminalization, and bear the weight of the worst negative health impacts and harms from punitive policies and entrenched inequities. People who use drugs are denied care and the programs that support them are threatened, defunded, or blocked from doing their work. Immigrant families are being torn apart. Queer rights and histories are under attack. Disabled folks are being stripped of essential healthcare services. This is the moment we are living in. And this is the moment when the harm reduction movement must rise up together.

Every day of the year, NHRC stands with syringe services programs (SSPs) and other frontline harm reduction organizations to save lives, strengthen communities, uplift leaders with lived and living experience, and plant new roots of change. We train healthcare providers to deliver compassionate care to people who use drugs, and we fight for bold, evidence-based life-saving policies. With your support, we can advance harm reduction as an essential resource for justice, equity, and survival. You can help us continue life-saving and life-affirming programs for people and communities most impacted by the so-called "War on Drugs" — more accurately described as a war on people. Our people.

This year, NHRC celebrates its 30th anniversary. For three decades, we’ve kept vital harm reduction programs alive, even in the face of funding cuts and political backlash. But we haven’t done it alone. We’ve done it because you’ve stood with us. We need you beside us more than ever. As demand for harm reduction grows, so do the threats to our life-saving work. Anti-harm reductionists are louder, more coordinated, and more relentless than I’ve seen in my decades of doing this work. So let’s be louder! Let’s be more coordinated. Let’s be more relentless than the people trying to erase harm reduction and tear down our community!

This GivingTuesday, December 2, I’m humbly asking you to stand up for the harm reduction movement. Stand up for all the progress we’ve made together. Stand up for NHRC with a contribution to support our work. Your support fuels a movement rooted in resistance, community, and love. It protects the work — and the people — those in power are trying to silence. Mark your calendars for December 2 to link arms with NHRC, because when we work together, we’re unstoppable. You don’t have to wait until GivingTuesday, and can uplift our work with a donation today!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

With fierce love and solidarity,

Laura Guzman, JD
Executive Director
