There is a bitter irony to the UK Government attending COP30 to negotiate an end to the climate crisis while still refusing to rule out financial support for Mozambique LNG. Yesterday’s case is a reminder of the litany of human rights concerns surrounding this project.
And that’s before considering further fossil-fuelled destruction of our planet. Because even before the horrifying details of this new case had come to light, Truss’s promise to fund Mozambique LNG crossed a line. There was never any doubt that the project would release a huge volume of emissions into our fast-baking atmosphere, threatening communities across the global south first and foremost.
Mozambique LNG is projected to emit between 3.3 and 4.5 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent over its lifetime. That's more than the combined annual greenhouse gas emissions of all 27 European Union countries. An environmental impact assessment estimates that the project’s emissions could increase the entire country’s emissions by 10% per year. [2]
And, as yesterday’s case reminds us, the problems here go way beyond even a carbon bomb and the mass threat to life it poses. Between July and September 2021, a group of Mozambican soldiers called the Joint Task Force, reportedly employed by Total Energies, are alleged to have detained, tortured and killed dozens of civilians on the massive compound Total had staked out to build Mozambique LNG. Yet despite these horrifying allegations, the UK is still currently saying it will fund this project. [3]
The UK government is at COP30 right now, promising that it’s all in for the fight against climate change and that it stands with the global south. We cannot allow these claims to stand while our taxpayer money is still backing a carbon bomb that threatens lives globally, or a company that may well have blood on its hands.
If you can, please write to the government today and tell it to cancel funding for Mozambique LNG.
