VIDEO OF THE DAY: Trump dealt new legal blow in Epstein files debacle

Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson's desperate Hail Mary to gum up the release of the Epstein files by stalling the bill in the Senate with a poison pill amendment collapsed yesterday as the upper chamber opted to swiftly pass the existing bill as-is by unanimous consent. After months of stonewalling and declaring all things Jeffrey Epstein to be nothing more than a "Democrat HOAX," the MAGA cult leader has firmly backed himself into a corner. He has no choice but to sign the bill into law now, making any further obstruction or withholding of the Epstein files by government officials a criminal offense going forward. Brian Tyler Cohen spoke with Democratic Rep. and co-author of the House legislation Ro Khanna, who had this say: "Finally, Congress found its spine. We don't have to be supine and supplicants to Donald Trump. We're a co-equal branch of government... His entire power is based on intimidation and pre-emptive compliance. And today I hope we've shown that Congress is capable of taking the fight to Donald Trump and winning." Hear, hear!

Take Action: Stop the Trump administration’s attacks on voting rights!

Mike Johnson "deeply disappointed" as Senate advances by unanimous consent Epstein bill that passed the House 427-1
With the exception of Donald Trump, no one came out looking worse for the wear this week than Mike Johnson, as Congress openly defied the GOP House speaker and finally passed legislation requiring the release of the infamous Epstein files. Johnson tried every tool in his obstruction belt, but in the end, he was powerless to halt passage of the bill and even begrudgingly cast his vote in favor in a last-gasp bid to save face. Johnson's last act of desperation — to pressure Senate Republicans to make changes to the bill and send it back to the House where he could then bog it down in procedural muck — was swiftly rejected. "I am deeply disappointed in this outcome," a deflated Johnson told MS NOW congressional reporter Mychael Schnell. When asked if Trump would veto the bill, Johnson responded, "I'm not saying that, I don’t know." We don't know about you folks, but we think defeat looks good on Mike.

Trump's top goon launches purge of critical workers

EDF Action The mass firings ordered by President Trump’s budget director, Russ Vought, are not only a continued attack on public service, they’re an attack on efficiency and expertise in our government. Without these workers, our air will be smoggier, our water dirtier and chemical plants more dangerous. That could put every American’s health at risk. If no one is enforcing limits on pollution, we get more of it, and more pollution means more cancer, birth defects and children with asthma. We must stand up to protect federal workers. Will you add your name to demand the Trump team stop purging critical federal workers?

Ex-Obama aide says Holocaust education is "confusing" young people into sympathizing with "weak, skinny" Palestinians
Hats off to Sarah Hurwitz, winner of Worst Hot Take of the Week™, an award we just made up to highlight the god-awful gobbledygook the former Obama speechwriter offered up at a recent conference hosted by the Jewish Federations of North America. Things started out reasonably enough with Hurwitz stating, "I think that since October 7th, or really before then, there have been huge shifts in America on how people think about Jews and Israel, and I think that is especially true of young people." Then she started digging: "You have TikTok just smashing our young people’s brains all day long with video of carnage in Gaza, and this is why so many of us can’t have a sane conversation with younger Jews, because anything that we try to say to them, they're hearing it through this wall of carnage." Hurwitz continued, "And you know, I think, unfortunately, the very smart bet that we made on Holocaust education to serve as anti-Semitism education, in this new media environment, I think that is beginning to break down a little bit... I think it may be confusing some of our young people about anti-Semitism, because they learn about big, strong Nazis hurting weak, emaciated Jews and then they think, 'Oh, anti-Semitism is like anti-black racism, right? Powerful white people against powerless black people.' So, when on TikTok all day long they see powerful Israelis hurting weak, skinny Palestinians, it’s not surprising that they think, 'Oh I know, the lesson of the Holocaust is you fight Israel. You fight the big powerful people hurting the weak people.'" Oookay. There isn't enough room in this newsletter to unpack all of the crazy here, but perhaps we start by giving "young people" a *little* more credit and shelve wildly condescending assumptions that, because they are young, they simply cannot comprehend nuance. Beyond that, standing up for basic human rights and against indiscriminately blowing up women and children and starving babies isn't controversial. If Hurwitz really wants to understand where "young people" are coming from, she could start by asking herself what asymmetrical forces rendered an entire people weak, emaciated, and skinny in the first place.

Trump freaks out over ABC reporter's Epstein question, threatens to revoke network license
Nope. Definitely not the unhinged ravings of a childish, wannabe strongman utterly deluded by a lifetime of entitlement. That the president of the United States thinks he can wave some mythical wand and simply disappear criticism and dissent is truly telling, and all signs point to a deeply unwell man uniquely unfit for the job at hand.

Trump treats Saudi crown prince to lavish White House dinner, denies his involvement in brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Speaking of unfit and unwell... Donald Trump rolled out the blood-red-stained carpet for Mohammad bin Salman yesterday, treating the Saudi crown prince and notorious human rights abuser to a ritzy, black-tie gala fit for, well, a king. Trump didn't simply ignore the crown prince's direct role in the brutal murder and dismemberment of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, he hailed bin Salman as a true friend, called the slain journalist "highly controversial," and absolved the crown the prince of any wrongdoing despite US intelligence definitively connecting him to the heinous assassination. Trump went on to lambast a reporter for "embarrassing" his friend with unfair questions about the hit he definitely ordered, an event bin Salman laughably described as "painful." Yeah, that's probably one word for it.

Marjorie Taylor Greene flips "traitor" insult back on Trump
The bitter feud that erupted between Donald Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene is showing no signs of simmering down, as the Georgia Republican hurled the president's "traitor" barbs right back at her one-time ally yesterday. Donald, of course, has spent the better part of the year pitching one fit after another in his failed quest to bury the Epstein files. For her role in forcing the House to release the files against his wishes, Trump has all but accused Greene of treason. Standing before victims of Jeffrey Epstein's decades-long sex trafficking operation, Greene said, "I fought for [Trump], for the policies, and for America First. And he called me a traitor for standing with these women and refusing to take my name off the discharge petition." She continued, "Let me tell you what a traitor is. A traitor is an American that serves foreign countries and themselves. A patriot is an American that serves the United States of America, and Americans like the women standing behind me." Folks, we did NOT have "civil war" on our MAGA Bullshit Bingo cards this year, but we are here for ALL of it.

Red state GOP gives Trump the middle finger on gerrymandering
In another act of rare defiance by GOP lawmakers, Indiana's Republican-led Senate opted NOT to heed Donald's demands to redraw congressional districts this year to steal seats away from Democrats in next year's midterms. Ten Republicans joined all Democrats in the state's upper chamber and voted 29-18 to adjourn for the year, effectively thumbing their collective noses at the MAGA cult leader who is desperate to protect his party's razor-thin majority in the US House by any means necessary. For a fella who said MAGA would soon tire from all his relentless winning, Trump sure is racking up a lot of L's lately.

White House issues defiant statement defending Trump's "quiet, piggy" insult hurled at Bloomberg reporter

Anyone expecting the White House to walk back Trump's incredibly sexist and offensive exchange with Bloomberg White House correspondent Catherine Lucey on Air Force One on Friday can lay those silly hopes to rest. The Trump administration released a statement yesterday, which read: "This reporter behaved in an inappropriate and unprofessional way toward her colleagues on the plane. If you're going to give it, you have to be able to take." Lucey's offense? Asking Trump a question about the Epstein files, which prompted him to bark back, "Quiet. Quiet, piggy." Ya know, for a guy who's struggled with his weight for decades and has had more than TWO DOZEN women accuse him of sexual misconduct, we're not sure "piggy" is the sort of insult he should be hurling. But we digress.
