John,
Yesterday afternoon, a U.S. district court blocked Texas’s racially gerrymandered map from being used in the 2026 midterms.
Attorney General Eric Holder summed up what this means for our work:
“This is a major victory for Texans, particularly Texans of color, and it marks another critical step in the fight against mid-decade gerrymanders enacted at the direction of the White House. Thanks to the bravery and determination of the voters fighting for fair representation in this case, Texas won’t have a double-gerrymandered congressional map.”
This fight is far from over, as the state of Texas has appealed this decision, and we know more states are planning to redraw their maps to give Republicans an unearned advantage in next year’s midterm elections.
But this ruling should send a signal to any Republicans currently considering their own gerrymander: You will face intense resistance from your constituents and in the courts.
As A.G. Holder put it: “The pursuit of illegal and immoral gerrymanders will not go unchallenged, and the American people will continue to fight for equal representation and their fundamental right to vote.”
Fairness won yesterday, but we need to be prepared for what comes next — especially as we know map manipulators are already plotting to steal more congressional seats in states across the country.
Help the NDRC fight back wherever Trump and the GOP attempt to steal congressional seats next. Your support enables us to end this redistricting crisis and ensure fairness prevails in our democracy. [[link removed]]
