Hi John,

Halloween may be over, but there’s at least one more scare ahead this season. For customers of for-profit utility NW Natural Gas, the bill at the end of this month will be higher. The methane gas monopoly raised rates again in November, this time by 5.4%. NW Natural will see about $1 million in profit from this latest rate hike. People stuck on the gas system are now paying 50% more on their bills than five years ago. Will you send your legislators an email now, urging them to take action for us?

Take action

Just because we call methane “natural” gas doesn’t mean it’s safe. Methane gas poses great impacts on our health and environment. So, even if you're fortunate enough to be gas-free at home, methane is adding smog to our neighborhoods and making the climate crisis worse.

We simply can’t afford methane “natural” gas anymore, especially when heating, hot water, and cooking with clean electricity is more affordable and healthier than fossil fuels. Why are we paying two utility bills when we could cut it down to one?

Elected officials in Oregon say they want to help us make our lives more affordable and protect us from climate pollution. Tell them they must do more to help every one of us make a transition to clean, healthy, affordable electric appliances in our homes and buildings.

With the cold weather and the holidays right around the corner, we’re turning on the heat and cooking all our traditional meals. For those of us stuck with a gas-burning furnace or gas stove, this time of year just got even more expensive thanks to the recent NW Natural rate hike.

Now you’re paying more to use an energy source that harms your health, is less energy efficient, and releases more greenhouse gases into the air, impacting our ever-worsening climate. It’s time we take action and let our legislators know they need to do more as we transition from methane to clean energy.

Take action

If you’re still using methane at home, there are a variety of solutions to fit your situation for a healthier and more affordable home. This, however, does not excuse our lawmakers from ensuring that our communities are moving to clean energy and lowering our utility bills.

And whether or not you are reliant on affordable clean energy at home, methane still affects our health, increasing healthcare costs, and harms our environment leading to more climate disasters — until we make the transition.

“Natural” gas doesn’t serve us, and your legislators need to hear that from you. Will you take action for lower utility bills and a healthier climate by sending an email to your legislator on the impacts of methane?

Keep yourself safe this holiday season,
