When our government ground to a halt for the last few weeks, one thing certainly wasn’t affected: Cori Bush’s commitment to the people.

Last Friday, Cori was on her way to speak at the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace event in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This small but mighty progressive community is doing courageous work organizing in one of the reddest states in the country, promoting justice, dignity, and real people-powered democracy.

But the overworking of our air transport system almost made everything fall apart. She sat on the tarmac for four hours. Then the announcement came: her flight was cancelled because of the shutdown chaos.

Most people would have turned around, blamed the situation, and called it a day.

Cori Bush is not like most people.

Instead of giving up, Cori left the airport, got in a car, and drove nine and half hours, from Charlotte to Fort Wayne, to make sure she didn’t break her commitment to the people counting on her.

No entourage.

No press cameras.

Just determination, purpose, and love for the people.

When she arrived, that small community in Fort Wayne was deeply appreciative. It mattered that a national leader showed up for them in the middle of a government shutdown. It mattered that she honored her word. It mattered that she treated them like they mattered.

Because they do. We all do.

This is what leadership looks like when it’s rooted in people-first values — the exact values we uplift and protect at the Movement for Freedom. And it’s why we fight to elect and support leaders who don’t crumble when the government does — leaders who dig deep, push forward, and show up.
