On November 18, the White House said it would get rid of most of the Department of Education. The White House said that the Department of Education isn’t needed anymore. They said the Department of Education doesn’t actually help students get services. They said that nothing bad happened to students during the government shutdown, so getting rid of the Department of Education is okay. The White House is wrong.

We know students did not get the help they needed from the Department of Education during the shutdown. What the White House wants to do to the Department of Education is against the law, and it will hurt disabled students. Only Congress can change the Department of Education. The White House is trying to get around the law, and take power from Congress. The Department of Education makes rules for schools to follow. Without the Department of Education, students and teachers will have a harder time.

Everyone has the right to a good education — and we need to protect that right. Contact your Congresspeople and tell them how the Department of Education has helped you or someone you know. You can talk about special education, IDEA, or other education programs or offices that helped you. Tell your representatives to make sure the White House follows the law. And don’t forget to talk to your local government! Make sure they know how important the Department of Education is to local schools.

The Department of Education helps protect student’s rights. Changing the Department of Education would make those rights harder to protect. Take action today — tell your Congresspeople we will not let this attack on disability rights continue!
