A Note from the Treasurer 

As we wrap up another year, I’m reminded some of life’s best surprises come when we least expect them. For many Iowans, one of those surprises is discovering unclaimed property through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. Whether it’s a forgotten savings or checking account, funds left in a digital payment service, uncashed checks or items from a safe deposit box, these hidden treasures are waiting to be reunited with their rightful owners.

In this newsletter, we’re highlighting harvest-inspired names and honoring veterans - each story being a reminder that unclaimed property touches every corner of Iowa. We’ll also share tips for keeping your contact information current, so your money stays with you. Plus, don’t miss the chance to explore other programs from my office, like IAble® and ISave 529™.

Honoring Those Who Served…and Their Hidden Treasure

This November, we pause to honor the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans. Their dedication protects the freedoms we enjoy every day. One small way we can give back is by helping ensure no veteran misses out on unclaimed money belonging to them.

From uncashed checks and forgotten bank accounts — even war medals found in safe deposit boxes — these hidden treasures may be waiting for the men and women who gave so much to our country.

Keep Your Information Up-to-Date

A common reason money ends up in Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is because of something simple, like a misspelled name or an outdated address. Each year, my office receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property for reasons just like these.

The good news: you can take steps to keep your money where it belongs. Start by reviewing your financial accounts regularly — checking, savings, retirement and beyond. Then, don’t forget about your credit history and credit score. Reviewing your credit reports often helps you spot errors, correct outdated information and watch for signs of fraud. Free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are available year-round at AnnualCreditReport.com [ [link removed] ].

Staying on top of your accounts gives you a clearer picture of your finances and can help protect your assets.

??More Ways to Help You Save

As Treasurer, one of my priorities is making sure every Iowan has the tools to protect and invest their money. While Great Iowa Treasure Hunt reunites Iowans with forgotten assets, my office also administers two programs that can help you plan for the future.

*IAble* is Iowa’s ABLE savings plan, which empowers individuals with disabilities to save for essential expenses - without affecting critical benefits like Medicaid, SSI, SNAP, HUD and FAFSA.

*ISave 529* is a tax-advantaged savings plan helping families prepare for education costs. Whether the child in your life chooses a four-year university, community college, apprenticeship program or technical school, these funds can support their future goals.

If you discover unclaimed money through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, you can use those funds to open or contribute to an IAble or ISave 529 account. It’s one of the simplest ways to turn a forgotten asset into a step toward a brighter financial future.
