 Last year, when Sharice Davids won this competitive seat for the fourth election in a row — despite the disappointing results at the top of the ticket — we knew National Republicans wouldn’t call it quits here in KS-03. But none of us expected them to launch a redistricting push so extreme, so brazenly undemocratic, they would try to kick Sharice out of Congress without even giving her constituents a say.
Win or lose, we know this redistricting battle will come down to just a small handful of votes in the Kansas legislature. And the only way we can influence those votes? Turn up the pressure. Here’s the truth: Without this grassroots team in Sharice’s corner, that special session Kansas Republicans worked so hard to set up would’ve gone on without a hitch. They’d push through their new, gerrymandered maps on a party line vote — and that would be the end of it. But that’s not what happened. A handful of Kansas Republicans felt the pressure we created. Every single member of this team who chipped in and spread the word proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that there would be enormous political consequences for rigging Kansas’ maps. And because of that, we’ve lived to fight another day. But nothing is set in stone right now. The regular legislative session begins on January 12 — and Republicans don’t need to gather any signatures this time. In fact, they’ve even said publicly that drawing Sharice out of office will be their number one priority! Not lowering costs. Not protecting health care. Seizing more power for themselves.
