My Native American heritage guides me every day.
I am Ojibwe and a member of the White Earth Nation. My Anishinaabe name,
Gizhiiwewidamookwe, means “speaks in a loud and clear voice” woman.
It’s more than a name to me. It’s a responsibility to use my voice for all
who go unheard, or get left behind.
I’ve spent my entire career fighting for kids and working families.
I helped deliver free school lunches for every kid in Minnesota.
I started the campaign to pass paid family and medical leave here in
Minnesota.
I led the fight to create the first-in-the-nation Missing and Murdered
Indigenous Relatives office, to address the crisis of violence against
Native women and two-spirit relatives.
That means every kiddo gets a warm meal at school. That means a parent can
take time to care for their sick kid without losing their job. That means
all our communities are being cared for and protected.
It’s hard to believe that when I’m elected to the Senate, I’ll be the
first Native American woman to serve there. Frankly, it’s long overdue.
But no matter what, I’ll make sure I won’t be the last.
