SIGN NOW: First Stephen Colbert, then Jimmy Kimmel, now Seth Meyers? Not if we have anything to say about it. Tell NBC not to cave to Trump’s dictator-like threats >>
John, Trump just launched another social media rant demanding NBC fire late night host Seth Meyers for daring to criticize him. [1]
And soon after, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr publicly amplified the attack, turning Trump’s tirade into another unmistakable show of official pressure. [2]
Just like when ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel – then reinstated him after you spoke out – NBC’s parent company, Comcast, is expected to bid on a multi-billion dollar merger deal that requires Trump and his FCC’s approval. [3]
You can see the implicit deal on offer here: silence the Trump critics on your network, and we’ll rubber stamp your deal.
Trump wins one less critic on the airwaves, and Comcast’s shareholders get richer. These kinds of actions are what lands a country in totalitarianism, where nobody is allowed to disagree with the people in charge.
NBC has a choice – but they’ll only pick the side of courage, transparency, and democracy if they know customers like you are demanding it. Our voices right now could be the difference between a network standing firm against Trump or collapsing under pressure.
If you agree that our media should hold the powerful accountable – NOT bow to them – sign the petition to tell NBC to keep Seth Meyers on the air >>
You don’t need to sit in the boardrooms of these media giants to see the pattern here – it’s obvious:
Let’s be clear: these are comedians, not reporters. But the networks they work for also report the news to millions of people across the country.
So how are we supposed to trust media giants to report that news fairly when their parent companies seem willing to bend to the president any chance they get?
The First Amendment doesn’t say “freedom of speech – unless it hurts the president’s feelings.” It guarantees our right to speak out, to criticize those in power, and to hold leaders accountable. With your action, we’re doing exactly that.
Add your name to push back: Tell NBC to hold firm against Trump and defend free speech and democracy >>
If we don’t speak out now, while anti-Trump voices are being silenced one after another, we may not get another chance, John.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
