THIS WEEK’S TL;DR:

Apply now ([link removed]) to protect your community’s stories; see Poynter faculty ([link removed]) mark a milestone; the academy for women leaders ([link removed]) to manage up, down and across generations; get the skills to lead ([link removed]) media organizations of the future; our year-end campaign continues ([link removed]) — defend press freedom with your contribution

** How to preserve decades of journalism
------------------------------------------------------------

When the Daily Hampshire Gazette switched website providers ([link removed]) in 2024, countless pieces from its 240-year history became inaccessible, creating a gap in Hampshire County's historical record.

Digital decay isn’t a one-off incident. According to a Pew Research study ([link removed]) , 38% of webpages that existed in 2013 have disappeared only a decade later.

“Journalism is the first draft of history, and sadly we lose those drafts regularly in local news thanks to changes in a newsroom's technology, ownership and due to lack of legacy planning,” said Kristen Hare, Poynter’s Director of Craft.

Need help safeguarding your stories? Through the support of Press Forward, Poynter partners with the Internet Archive and Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) to launch Today’s News for Tomorrow ([link removed]) — a free initiative to offer newsrooms the training, tools and services they need to preserve and access their digital assets.

“Today's News for Tomorrow will help local journalists and newsrooms learn what we're up against, and thanks to Internet Archive's amazing services, make sure the first draft of news is still around for future generations.”

Apply by Jan. 9, 2026 ([link removed]) , to join 300 newsrooms preserving the stories that keep their communities informed.

** TIP OF THE WEEK
------------------------------------------------------------

By Tony Elkins, Faculty; Poynter Leadership Academy ([link removed]) Lead
[link removed]

“I didn’t know this was the actual job,” is something I hear often during the week in my leadership workshops. The “this” they are referring to is communicating, listening, delegating, onboarding, having one-on-one meetings and advocating for the needs of others. I refer to them as human-centered skills and they are the backbone of good leadership.

The simplest way to start practicing these skills is to schedule recurring meetings with your team. It doesn’t matter if it’s weekly or monthly, you need to be meeting with your direct reports. It needs to be on the calendar, and do everything you can to avoid canceling. If you do, reschedule immediately.

These meetings are opportunities for you to connect with your team and begin to understand what their needs, concerns and goals are. The best one-on-ones are employee-driven, so I encourage you to let them set the agenda. Ask what they need and how you can support them, rather than a list of what they're working on.

💡 Applications for all of Poynter’s Leadership Academies ([link removed]) are now open for enrollment. Fill out the application today for a spot in Essential Skills for New Managers ([link removed]) , Women’s Leadership Academy ([link removed]) or the Poynter Leadership Academy ([link removed]) .
