Leaving on a jet plane

Later this week I will board a plane for Boston to attend this year’s meeting of AAR/SBL (the much shorter way to write “the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature”). This annual event gathers thousands of religion scholars and Bible scholars from around the world. There are several reasons we attend, and one of them is to hear about the exciting work happening right now that might make for excellent articles in the Century. If you’re planning to attend, please let me know or stop by our table in the exhibit hall!

One scholar I’ll be connecting with at the conference is Boston resident and CC writer Mac Loftin. He is one of my favorite people to interview for our YouTube channel, and we have a brand new chat for you today about why those in power seek to control our grieving.

Scroll down for even more great new content. You’ll find a book review about a collection of essays from Martha Park (a frequent Century illustrator) that explores overlapping apocalypses of religion and climate. We also have reporting on Ukraine, where pastors are using technology to minister to those living under occupation, and a new essay about the ways we build history every day with the choices we make. Plus even more below.

Apocalypses all around us

“Through personal essays, nuanced reporting, and original illustrations, Park grapples with religious ambivalence and ecological care as she wonders how faith both compels and hinders our love for a planet in peril.”

Pastors in exile

“What’s happening is like an anti-heresy campaign. The occupation is best understood as Christians punishing Christians who refuse to say the invasion is divinely sanctioned.”

by Marc Roscoe Loustau

VIDEO: Why do the powerful try to control our grief?

Mac Loftin chats with Jon about how and why those in power try to control the ways we publicly mourn.

What history are we making?

“I remember when my son first asked me what history is. I told him it’s the story we write with our lives.”

by Kelly Brown Douglas

Jo Bertini’s Reading a Fathom of Sand and Taken by the Sky

“Jo Bertini’s career has been shaped by deserts across the globe, and the Australian painter infuses her canvases with a sense of reverence and intimacy.”
