We’re still feeling the energy from our 25th Anniversary Gala — a night filled with joy, purpose, and people power. Whether you were in the room or cheering us on from afar, thank you for helping make it a celebration worthy of 25 years of building progressive power in Maryland. It was a reminder that our movement is strong because you are in it. If you missed any of the highlights, you can revisit the night and explore our 25-year legacy on our website.

We're also looking squarely at the challenges before us. It’s been five days since the federal government reopened, and the impacts of the shutdown are still being felt by our communities.

And while many were hoping to see an extension of ACA subsidies to prevent healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for working families, Trump and his allies are already flooding the media with talk of a so-called “Trumpcare” plan — yet another attempt to dismantle the care people need to live and survive. We’ll be monitoring every new development, and our healthcare organizing team is in the field every day fighting to protect and expand affordable healthcare for Marylanders.

Open enrollment for Maryland’s health insurance marketplace is underway (Nov. 1 – Jan. 15). Premiums and coverage rules are shifting this year — make sure you have the latest info and support.

Healthcare Task Force: Stop the Healthcare Heist!

PMD is supporting our allies at People’s Action, PNHP and many other groups to win an extension of the enhanced premium tax credits that millions of Americans need in order to afford their health insurance premiums. Based on the ideas GOP members of Congress are floating about their healthcare “plan” we know it will be woefully inadequate and will only make things for patients and providers. Thanks for being in the fight to stop the Heist!

You can also support this campaign by sharing your story— if your insurance premium is going to go up let us know! Tag our FB or Instagram page and post what your premium will cost. Or if you or your family members will be affected by the cuts and changes to Medicaid, let us know. Drop a note to our healthcare organizer Patty. Cherry Hill People’s Union

Join us Saturday, Nov 22 at 12:00pm for the Cherry Hill People’s Union Community Cleanup at the vacant New Era Academy and Carter G. Woodson school sites – two spaces that once served our community, now left behind and piled with trash. Everyone is welcome to join us. Sign up here.

Gaithersburg Tenant Union

The first meeting for the Gaithersburg Tenants Union is in the books. 60 Community members gathered at Gaithersburg High School to discuss the issues they are facing around skyrocketing rent prices and what we can do to make some change. Members plan on meeting today, November 17th at 7:30pm at city hall to voice their demands for rent stabilization in the city of Gaithersburg. News You Can Use: When will your voting district boundaries hold still?

Texas and California appear to be in a plus-five-Red, plus-five-Blue mathematical standoff as redistricting fever continues to take hold in states all over the nation. Even here in Maryland, the dominant state Democrats want to root out the last Red district in the state (on the Eastern Shore) and provide eight-out-of-eight Democratic members of the House of Representatives. Everywhere this is risky, as safe-ish seats become less safe while populations are moved around at the whim of their state political establishments. A little grace is provided in, for instance, quite Red Indiana, where huge pressure from Trump has been resisted. Fans of the political horse-race are advised to watch where insurgent candidates of both political persuasions demolish the certainties of the computer-savvy redistricting consultants. Sometimes even the aged writer in this corner of things can’t resist the intrigue. Real or imaginary, it’s News You Can Use.
