The Radical Trying to Claim Pelosi’s Seat
Scott Wiener announced he would run for Nancy Pelosi’s seat before she had even confirmed her retirement. Pelosi may share much of his ideology, but she understands political danger. Wiener does not. He has built a record so controversial that even some Democrats privately worry his extremism is politically radioactive.
Seven parts of Wiener’s record stand out and deserve real scrutiny.
He Overrides Local Communities and Treats Sacramento as all-powerful. Wiener’s approach to housing is built on the assumption that Sacramento should dictate how every community grows. He has repeatedly stripped cities of zoning control and forced them to accept state-mandated density regardless of whether neighborhoods have the infrastructure to support it. He consistently sides with Sacramento-level authority and the interests that profit from it, leaving the people who actually live with the consequences silenced.
He Cuts Parents Out and Treats Them as Obstacles.
Wiener’s legislation involving minors follows a clear pattern: when parents’ views conflict with the state’s ideological agenda, parents lose. He has supported policies that prohibit schools from informing families about significant changes in their children’s identity or behavior. More troubling, his high-profile measure on gender transitions effectively invites minors and families in conflict with their home states over gender medicine to treat California as a refuge — a move critics argue undermines parental authority and fuels runaways. And when lawmakers tried to strengthen protections so that any adult paying for sex with any minor would face serious consequences, he fought efforts to make those protections absolute.
