Now is the time to hold Big Tobacco to account!
|
Dear Friend,
United Nations headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland: A monster emerges from a giant pack of cigarettes. It captures a youth advocate, representing the millions of young people who have died from tobacco-related causes and the tobacco industry's continued targeting. It’s headed to the U.N., where decision-makers have gathered for the global tobacco treaty negotiations — we can only imagine what havoc it intends to wreak there. But before it can slither into the treaty talks, activists and advocates from around the world stop the monster from entering the building with their organizing, their passion, and their dedication.
Was this a strange fever dream I had on my flight to Geneva? Good guess, but no. It was a street theatre performance and action to kick off our organizing at the global tobacco treaty meetings to challenge Big Tobacco’s influence in public health policy and to make Big Tobacco pay.
And we’re just getting started. Tomorrow we’ll deliver a petition that’s been signed by tens of thousands of people, calling on governments to make Big Tobacco pay for its abuses. I’m taking it straight to the president of the global tobacco treaty talks — and I’m hoping it will have your name on it. Together we can hold this deadly industry to account.
