Sheldon Whitehouse Senator for Rhode Island

Team,

A new phase of Democrats' fight to lower health care costs is getting started.

All over the country, Americans are opening their mailboxes to find that their health insurance premiums are doubling or even tripling next year. Most families just don't have that kind of extra money in their monthly budgets.

I voted no on the Republican funding proposal because I'm skeptical that Republicans will work with us on health care in good faith. I would love to be proven wrong, but as a party, Republicans actually spend a lot of their energy trying to take health care away from people.

One thing is clear: if Republicans choose not to help lower skyrocketing premiums, they will pay a heavy political price.

President Trump and his crew gleefully spent the shutdown maximizing pain for people and our economy, while throwing extravagant parties for themselves and wasting huge sums to turn the White House into a gaudy palace. From his gilded golf club, President Trump did his damnedest to keep food off the tables of millions of children and families.

The Trump shutdown of the federal government put this president’s mad cruelty on display for the world to see. And the American people will not soon forget.

I’ll keep an eye on the Republican mischief — working for you as I always do.

Thank you for standing with me.
