It took bipartisan courage to end the seven-week shutdown. Now we need the same courage to make sure it actually leads to lower health care costs.
In the piece I explain why the eight Democrats who voted with Republicans to reopen the government were right to do so, and why the bipartisan group of House members who just sent a letter to Senate leaders have it exactly right: “In a divided Congress, the only way to fix a looming health insurance crisis is through a bipartisan, bicameral solution.”
What happens next depends in large part on whether leaders in both parties choose real problem solving over political games. As I write, “The American people are more than exhausted by these political games. They are infuriated, because the games are being played on both sides, and at their expense.”
I hope you will read the full op-ed and share it with friends who are tired of shutdown politics and want leaders in both parties to act like adults.
