Dear John,

Prison Fellowship continues to raise a voice for the least of these, even during tumultuous times. Tomorrow, I’ll be welcoming faith leaders and Prison Fellowship Justice Ambassadors from across the country to join me for a day of advocacy in D.C. Together, we’ll meet with lawmakers to amplify support for the Safer Supervision Act—a crucial step toward helping our neighbors thrive after their incarceration.

As you may know, the first few months after incarceration ends are critical. People often face immediate obstacles after leaving prison—like finding employers who want to hire people with a criminal record, or landlords who want to rent to them. You can imagine how much more difficult this becomes when people have to take time off work to satisfy their supervision requirements, or when they don’t have proper transportation to check in when they’re supposed to.

And many face another hurdle: completing a period of supervised release. It can provide accountability and structure, but too many people receive lengthy terms that hinder them from achieving their true potential.

Did you know more than 100,000 men and women in the U.S. face these challenges under federal supervised release? And those challenges directly impact their families and communities. The Safer Supervision Act will allow community corrections to be guided by proven, data-backed strategies. Our communities thrive when men and women leaving prison successfully find honorable work, care for their families, and contribute to the life of their neighborhoods.

It’s a joy to come together with this family of advocates to bring Gospel values to the halls of Congress. Every person is made in the image of God with dignity and real potential to change and to flourish. Our nation’s laws should reflect that. If you want to learn more
