Interim Update
Now that the federal shutdown has ended and programs like SNAP have resumed, I want to refocus on the work happening here at home. My responsibility is to the people of District 22B and to the State of Minnesota. That means staying laser-focused on the problems we can fix at the state level and holding our government accountable when it fails the people it's supposed to serve.
*Looking Into Where Your Money Is Going*
I am currently working on several investigations that directly affect you. Beyond the massive fraud we have all read about, I have been digging into how the Department of Corrections is spending your tax dollars, and what I have found so far is concerning.
Stillwater Prison was shut down under Governor Walz and DOC leadership, and the overall number of prison beds across the state has been reduced. This does not mean crime is down. It means fewer violent offenders can be held accountable. That raises serious questions. Where are we going to house inmates? Are we actually saving money, or simply pushing more offenders into probation and home monitoring?
The DOC was given one million dollars to create a long-term plan that would address these concerns, yet they still haven't produced one. This is a major red flag. I will continue to push until we have a comprehensive answer that demonstrates how we will compensate for this closure.
*Critical Public Safety Infrastructure Needs Urgent Attention*
Minnesota continues to spend money on new, flashy projects while the basic infrastructure that keeps people safe is left to age and fall apart. Roads and bridges still need attention. And, while the new BCA facility in Mankato will help process cases and support law enforcement, the timing raises serious questions. The desire for a new facility is not new. But now, during a campaign season when the administration is under growing scrutiny for its public safety failures, this project has suddenly become a priority. Why was it ignored when the state had an 18-billion-dollar surplus? We simply can't afford to spend 67 million dollars on new buildings when the foundation of our public safety system is cracking beneath us.
Our statewide 911 system and radio tower network are aging, strained, and at risk of failure. Updating (not upgrading) these systems could cost more than 500 million dollars. These systems dispatch our law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and first responders. They are the backbone of emergency response in Minnesota.
While Governor Walz can proudly tout the opening of a new facility, he continues to neglect the less flashy but essential infrastructure that Minnesotans rely on every single day. Unfortunately, making necessary maintenance fixes to our radio tower network isn't quite as attention-grabbing as ribbon cutting ceremonies.
So, I'm raising the red flag now because if we do not take action soon, we will face a crisis that could've been prevented with responsible leadership and the right priorities.
*Fixing the Broken Health and Human Services System*
Health and Human Services remains one of the most tangled and dysfunctional agencies in state government. Counties are being buried under mandates and paperwork created by the state, which pulls staff away from actually helping people. The Walz Administration continues to create more positions, more bureaucracy, and more hoops to jump through, while those in need wait longer for services.
There is a difference between the meaningful oversight we've called for, and the suffocating and unnecessary red tape being pushed by the current administration. Walz’s plan for “oversight” is hollow and has no teeth. It leaves the same people who oversaw programs riddled with fraud in charge of investigating themselves. That is not accountability.
This is a state problem, but county taxpayers are paying the price. We must clear out unnecessary mandates and let county workers do their jobs.
*Minnesota Needs Honesty*
Right now, the message coming from the Governor’s Office is that everything is fine. But Minnesotans know better. Taxes are going up. The price of vehicle tabs has skyrocketed. Billions have been wasted through fraud and mismanagement and when people push for answers, they're told to look the other way.
I will not look the other way. My job is not to protect the political establishment. My job is to protect you.
*My Promise to You*
I ran for office because Minnesota was heading in the wrong direction, and too many people felt unheard. I want lower taxes, real transparency, and honest accountability. Minnesotans should not be paying more every year only to see services decline and waste go unchecked.
I will not stop raising red flags when something is wrong. I will not stop demanding answers. And I will not stop fighting for the people of District 22B.
If you need help or have a concern, reach out anytime. I am here to serve you.
Thank you,
- Terry
