On Thursday, November 13th, Starbucks Workers United announced a national strike consisting of over 1,000 baristas and 65 stores and coordinated across more than 40 cities.
Starbucks workers are demanding better staffing, higher pay, and resolution of unfair labor practice charges. The Starbucks on Woodmen and Marksheffel in Colorado Springs is a primary location for this national strike. While the workers are out on picket lines fighting for a fair contract, they will need assistance in making up the loss in income.
Baristas across more than 550 current union stores are prepared to continue escalating to make this the largest, longest strike in company history if Starbucks fails to deliver a fair union contract and resolve unfair labor practice charges.
Starbucks can afford to provide their CEO Brian Niccol with the highest CEO-to-worker pay ratio in the US (making 6,666 times more than the median barista), a private jet for Brian’s commute from California to Seattle, and spend nearly $2 billion in stock buy-backs just last year.
Yet they say they can’t afford to provide their own workers with a decent standard of living.
Starbucks is the biggest violator of labor law in modern history. Administrative Law Judges at the National Labor Relations Board have found that Starbucks has committed more than 400 labor law violations.
Please consider contributing to the workers' cause so that they can support themselves and their families during this time.
