Double the expected need — and impact — at Project Homeless Connect

Our community came together in a big way this year for Project Homeless Connect, a one-day, one-stop resource fair that took place Sept. 23 for people experiencing homelessness.

The event underscored not only great need in Anchorage but also a desire for support with an estimated 1,000 guests, double the number expected. Almost the entire day, the line to get into the Egan Center wrapped around the block. Not all attendees were living outdoors or in a shelter. Some had housing but their situation was precarious.

One attendee, who took the opportunity for a mammogram, had advice that extends beyond the one-day event:

“Go by what they need as a human and treat each other equally, no matter the struggle.”

Thank you to all who took a step forward. And big appreciation to the volunteers, service providers and donors who supported Project Homeless Connect! Your time and heart made a real difference.

Stay tuned – we will be seeking partners soon for next year’s event.

  • If you cannot join by computer, you may dial in by phone only at 202-735-3323 with access code 5006287#.

ACEH will announce an all-CoC meeting soon to share more information and help our community prepare a strong, competitive collaborative application that centers the needs of individuals.

We recommend that service providers and past grantees review the NOFO in the meantime.

New grants for housing and homelessness

A new Alaska funding opportunity aims to address the needs of those experiencing homelessness or who are housing insecure through supports, housing assistance and outreach. The Alaska Housing Finance Corp. is providing up to 10 new awards through the Basic Housing Assistance Program and the Next Generation Stabilization Program.

We are amplifying the opportunity and encouraging organizations who haven’t received these funds in the past to apply.

Note this deadline: Applicants must submit a simple intent to apply form by today, Friday, Nov. 14.

Spotlight on Anchorage Continuum of Care: NeighborWorks

It’s easy to think of a landlord as someone who collects rent. But in Anchorage, one of the city’s largest landlords spends each day helping people find stability, dignity and home.

NeighborWorks Alaska has been doing just that for more than 40 years, providing safe and affordable housing — and second chances — to people moving beyond homelessness.

The nonprofit owns more than 1,000 housing units spread across Anchorage, many of them set aside for those with low incomes. It also works with other nonprofits and nearly 200 private landlords to ensure individuals get housing that fits their needs and circumstances.
