Since Republicans decided to leave families high and dry before the holidays, I took some time during this shutdown to volunteer with Puente to make sure families in Phoenix were able to put food on the table.

I also made another trip to Eloy Detention Center, where I heard nothing but the same old excuses from ICE agents to explain away the inhumane conditions in the facility. I’ve been fighting for the rights of detainees there, including my constituent Yari, who I literally witnessed vomit blood. She is fighting leukemia and is still being denied the proper care or treatment she needs.

Back in Washington, I took the conversation directly to Speaker Johnson with a table right outside of his office. Speaker Johnson allowed Arizonans in the 7th District to go without representation for nearly two months, and let the government shutdown drag on to avoid a vote on the Epstein files and protect Trump’s wealthy circle of elites. I wasn’t going to let him go unchecked.

And when he finally brought the House back for the continuing resolution earlier this week, I voted NO on this so-called “deal” because it lacks any protection for affordable healthcare access and leaves behind the 370,000 Arizonans who will have to pay more for their healthcare coverage.

I’m not one to back down from a fight, and I don’t care about keeping the status quo. I’m in DC more fired up than ever to fight for our communities and to protect every Arizonan’s healthcare, dignity, and future.
