Of all the anti-democratic, wannabe-king BS pulled by the Trump administration, the charges filed against Representative LaMonica McIver a few months ago rank among the most dangerous. 

The regime targeted McIver for conducting legislative oversight at an ICE facility in her district -- i.e. for doing her job. The politically motivated charges were a warning shot meant to chill dissent and intimidate a co-equal branch of government from performing its constitutionally-mandated oversight duty. 

We’d hoped that the courts would recognize this for the political persecution it is and dismiss the charges immediately. Unfortunately, this week a federal judge ruled that the case could go to trial.

Trump wants this prosecution to make his opponents think twice before questioning his regime or demanding accountability. But by standing with McIver, we send a message to all those in a position to resist this authoritarian onslaught that if they do the right thing, there are millions of everyday Americans out there who’ll have their backs. 

This is Trump’s first prosecution of a sitting Member of Congress. If he succeeds, it won’t be his last. Let’s give McIver the resources she needs to fight back and prevail.
