John,

There’s a case before the Supreme Court that Ron DeSantis is watching closely.

He’s hoping that the court will strike down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act — and in doing so, clear the way for states like Florida to steal power away from communities of color so he can create more Republican-held House seats.

Section 2 safeguards people of color’s ability to elect candidates of their choice and bans states from enacting racial gerrymanders. If the Supreme Court undermines this critical protection, it could open the floodgates for states like Florida to redistrict and dilute the voices of voters of color.

While the fair maps movement is fighting for the future of the Voting Rights Act in the courts, we’re busy preparing for whatever happens next. We must be ready to fight back against Republican attempts to gerrymander from spreading to states like Florida and beyond.

Republicans see a weakened or undermined Voting Rights Act as an opportunity to gerrymander several districts for themselves at the expense of voters of color — donate today to make sure we have the resources and readiness we need to meet the moment and protect voters from being silenced by power-hungry politicians. DeSantis has made no secret about his desire to tip the scales in Republicans’ favor in Florida. He’s been threatening to follow the lead of states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina and conduct its own mid-decade redraw to grab more seats for Republicans in the House. He has also repeatedly called for a new U.S. Census — an unprecedented aberration, since the Constitution establishes that the census should be taken once every decade.

“We are going to press this issue,” DeSantis vowed in August. “This is something that has stuck in my craw for a number of years because I remember telling everybody that we were going to get two seats at the last census, and then when they came out with it, we only got one.”

Florida’s Attorney General even wrote to the Census Bureau, claiming that they must “award Florida what we’re entitled to. An extra seat in Congress.”

We’re sending a clear message to politicians like Ron DeSantis that nobody is entitled to power. In the months ahead, we have to be prepared to fight back and return power to the people.

Can you donate $20 or more today to fuel our strategy fighting back against redistricting attempts wherever they crop up next? [[link removed]]
